DETAILS:
The following is a description of all the academic courses provided at Seabird Adult Education leading to a B.C. Adult Dogwood or BC Dogwood certificate. Students should carefully consider which English language option they take. If you are planning to attend a post-secondary institution please review the language pre-requisite before deciding which English course to take. Many post-secondary degree programs will require English 12, English First Peoples or English Literature 12 and students should confirm post-secondary pre-requisites before deciding on the type of language arts instruction.
LANGUAGE ARTS REQUIREMENT OPTIONS:
Courses |
---|
English 12 (120-hours – 4 credits): English 12 provides a framework for students to experience language in its full range of context and purposes. The framework allows student to use language to communicate their ideas through a variety of print and non-print media, and to understand and draw conclusion from communications, either written, spoken or displayed visually. Language knowledge and skills are taught within the context of the six language arts processes of speaking, listening, writing, reading, viewing and representing. As student’s progress through the grade levels, the communication processes and materials used become more complex, and students are expected to produce increasingly sophisticated work. Students also explore Canadian, world and aboriginal literature as a way of understanding their literary and multicultural heritage. Students must obtain a minimum of 50% to pass. Please check on grade expectations for any planned post-secondary program. |
English First Peoples 12 (120-hours – 4 credits) English 12 First Peoples (EFP 12) provides opportunities for all students to 1. engage with indigenous creative expression 2. enter the worlds of First Peoples provincially, nationally, and internationally. The course focuses on the experiences, values, beliefs, and lived realities of First Peoples as evidenced in various forms of text including oral story, speech, poetry, dramatic work, dance, song, film, and prose (non-fiction and fiction). English 12 First Peoples is the academic equivalent of English 12. Students will develop the English language and literacy skills and capacities they must have in order to meet British Columbia’s graduation requirements. Students must obtain a minimum of 50% in the course to pass. Please check on grade expectations for any planned post-secondary program. |
MATH REQUIREMENT OPTIONS:
In selecting your math option please carefully consider your future plans. If you are considering moving on to post-secondary training, please check the institution and its program requirements prior to course selection to ensure that you have the required math pre-requisite. Please note that for a BC Dogwood or BC Adult Dogwood graduation certificate you require a Mathematics Grade 11, 4-credit, 120-hour course. Post-secondary institutions may require a specific Grade 12 math course and minimum grades to enter individual programs.
